Our Review
Owner-winemaker Mario Marson spent many years as the winemaker/viticulturist with the late Dr John Middleton at the celebrated Mount Mary. Mario has over 35 years of experience in Australia and overseas, having undertaken vintages at Isole e Olena in Tuscany and Piedmont and at Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in Burgundy, where he was inspired to emulate the multi-clonal wines favoured by these producers, pioneered in Australia by John Middleton. In 1999 he and his wife, Helen, purchased the Vinea Marson property on the eastern slopes of the Mt Camel Range. They have planted shiraz and viognier, plus Italian varieties of sangiovese, nebbiolo, barbera and refosco dal peduncolo. Marson also sources northeastern Italian varietals from Porepunkah in the Alpine Valleys. Exports to China. -JAMES HALLIDAY
About
The Marson family continues a winemaking tradition of some four generations in Friuli, north-eastern Italy and Australia at its Heathcote vineyard, Vinea Marson. Inspired by vintages in Piedmont and Tuscany, winemaker Mario Marson’s passion for Nebbiolo and Sangiovese saw him establish Vinea Marson on the rich Cambrian soil of the Mount Camel Range at Heathcote in 2000. After formative years in the Yarra Valley, the Estate’s Sotto and Sopra vineyards on the eastern slope proved the perfect place to grow these Italian varieties as well as Barbera & Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso, with multiclonal plantings producing wines of depth and complexity. Mario’s desire to craft beautiful old-world wines in the new world setting extends to classic French varietals that comprise the remainder of our Estate range: a food friendly Shiraz Viognier and an elegant Viognier. These wines are complemented by the Heritage wines, which pays homage to the family’s history in Friuli by sourcing indigenous Italian varieties from the Alpine Valleys to produce a delicious Prosecco, a dry, multi-blend white, the Grazia, an orange wine, the Friulano #7 and the Picolit – a dessert wine made from this unusual and largely unknown variety. Today, Mario is joined in the winery by daughter Madeleine as Assistant Winemaker, the sixth generation in the family.
