Braewattie

Maggi Ryan's great-grandfather acquired the Braewattie property in the 1880s, and it remained in the family until 1971. When the property came back on the market in 1990, Maggi and husband Des seized the opportunity to reclaim it, complete with a small existing planting of 300 pinot noir and chardonnay vines. Those plantings now extend to 4.4ha of pinot noir and 1.1ha of chardonnay; part of the production is sold and a small amount is contract-made. The Macedon Brut is a particularly good wine. -JAMES HALLIDAY
