Our Review

John Mitchell and family established Montalto in 1998, but the core of the vineyard goes back to '86. It is planted to pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling, shiraz, tempranillo and sauvignon blanc. Intensive vineyard work opens up the canopy, with yields of 3.7-6.1t/ha. Wines are released in three ranges: the flagship Single Vineyard, Montalto estate wines and Pennon Hill. Montalto leases several external vineyards that span the peninsula, giving vastly greater diversity of pinot noir sources and greater insurance against weather extremes. There is also a broad range of clones adding to that diversity. Montalto has hit new heights with its wines from these blocks. Exports to the Philippines and China

About

We produce cool climate wine on the Mornington Peninsula, a beautiful region with rolling hills, orchards, olive groves, historic mansions, and over 200 vineyards specialising in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. We are a family-owned and run estate in Red Hill, where produce is grown, shared and celebrated. The home estate of 30 acres under vine is the primary source for our winemaker, Simon Black; and the productive kitchen garden and orchards, and 1500 olive trees supply the kitchens. We supplement our Red Hill vineyard with grapes from other sub-regions of the Peninsula; these vineyards are differentiated from Red Hill by their altitude, soil type, proximity to the ocean and temperature.

Information

Montalto’s warm and welcoming cellar door team invite you to sample our award-winning wines. Relax and enjoy a selection of wine varietals, hand-picked by our team, as they guide you through the Montalto range. During the course of your tasting, you will learn how the unique microclimates of the Mornington Peninsula affect our vineyards and experience different wines from across our range. Bookings are not required for individuals. For groups of 8-10 please call 03 5989 8412 to book a group tasting, available at 11 am daily. Please note we’re unable to cater to larger groups at the cellar door. Price: $10 per tasting, redeemable on purchase.

Montalto is all about sharing: food, wine and good times with loved ones. Connecting with each other and to the surrounding environment. You can sit amongst Wendy’s Garden, in the beautiful sheltered Piazza courtyard, offering a climate controlled experience with breathtaking views through oversized retractable windows, in our Chefs Hat Restaurant or Alto private dining room located above our Cellar Door and providing a spectacular bird’s-eye view of our 50-acre property.
