Penfolds has unveiled its limited-edition Grange from the 2019 vintage. The Penfolds Grange by NIGO release is the first-ever design collaboration for arguably Australia's most iconic wine.
It's a milestone year for Penfolds, with 2024 marking the winery's 180th anniversary. NIGO, who has been a pioneer in street fashion, has reimagined the packaging of Grange.
NIGO created his first clothing label in Tokyo in 1993 and is the creative director of his label HUMAN MADE and the artistic director of KENZO. So, what does the Penfolds by NIGO collaboration look like?
NIGO at Magill Estate.
Inspired by the Penfolds Magill Estate in the Barossa Valley, NIGO's design depicts a bold and colourful grape graphic, with the Penfolds logo redesigned through Human Made’s trademark typography.
Each Grange box is individually numbered and includes a bandana and bottle neck tag designed by NIGO, along with an authenticity certificate.
The 2019 Penfolds Grange by NIGO limited-edition 750ml bottle retails for $1350, a magnum (1.5L) of the 2019 is $3100, and as an extension of the collaboration, NIGO has designed a silk rug as part of the series. It will set you back $10,000, but there are only 25 available globally.
"This is a different direction for us, and the first time we have changed the distinctive gift box of our flagship Grange. Collaborating with NIGO has been inspired by Penfolds history of pushing boundaries in winemaking, and now we expand this to exploration of new creative ideas. As a collector, NIGO understands the reputation of Grange and its legacy. He was able to create a limited-edition approach that is both playful and fresh while remaining respectful to the history of the wine. We have never done this before, and the result is brave and refreshing," says Penfolds chief marketing officer, Kristy Keyte.
2019 Penfolds Grange Bin 95
97/3 per cent shiraz/cabernet sauvignon; matured in new American oak for 19 months. A quieter release for the 2019 rendition of Penfolds' world-famous icon. A little less of the formic and VA heft of youth in this showing and a bit more approachable as a result. Deep crimson in the glass with familiar characters of deep black berry fruits, plum compote and black cherry underscored with hints of baking spices, Calvados, espresso grounds, black olive tapenade, roasting meats, creamy oak, purple flowers and earth. Weighty and concentrated with classic Grange density of fruit and tannin; persistent, texturally flexing and long of finish. As per usual will cellar like a dream, but I think it will hit its drinking window a bit earlier than usual. – Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion, 97 pointsPenfolds Grange by NIGO is now available globally (excluding mainland China).
