Our Review

Mitchelton was founded in 1969 by Ross Shelmerdine, named after the explorer Thomas Mitchell, who passed by here. Ross had a splendid vision for the striking winery, restaurant, now-iconic observation tower and surrounding vineyards. Owned by Gerry Ryan AOM (founder of Jayco) since 2012, Mitchelton is a destination in its own right, with music concerts ‘on the green’ hosting such varied luminaries as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Jimmy Barnes; a hotel and spa also opened in 2018. Wine quality has remained consistent over the years, particularly of the top-tier shiraz. Mitchelton has estate vineyards in both Nagambie and Heathcote and purchases fruit from growers across Victoria. Exports to China, Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea and Vietnam.

About

Over 50 years ago, in 1967 Shelmerdine, commissioned wine industry stalwart, Colin Preece to locate the best location in south east Australia capable of producing outstanding wines. The brief also dictated that it was also required to be ‘exceptionally beautiful.’ Preece, who is still considered one of Australia’s greatest and most influential winemakers, chose an old grazing property, prized for its climate, soil and proximity to the waterways. In 1969 Shelmerdine acquired the land calling his new winery Mitchelton, a derivation of Mitchellstown which was the name explorer Major Thomas Mitchell originally intended for this piece of land upon its original settlement in 1836. The Nagambie Estate today boasts 108 vineyard hectares of Riesling, Chardonnay, Marsanne, Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon while the Toolleen vineyard in Heathcote with its unique Cambrian soil is producing exceptional quality Shiraz fruit and interesting parcels. The past 5 decades has seen a change in ownership at Mitchelton before Gerry Ryan purchased the property 2011. Substantial resources have been dedicated to develop both the wine and hospitality aspects of Mitchelton, with the vision to become Central Victoria’s iconic wine, food, art and hospitality destination. In addition to its reputation as a great regional wine producer from Nagambie and Heathcote, Mitchelton is firmly establishing itself as a tourism destination, bolstered by the development of a new 58-room luxury Hotel and Day Spa to accompany The Muse Restaurant, Australia’s largest commercial collection of Aboriginal Art and café style Provedore. The Cellar Door, iconic Ashton Tower and underground cellars still remain a drawcard to the estate.
