Ten Minutes by Tractor

Victoria | Mornington Peninsula

Our Review

Ten Minutes by Tractor is owned by Martin and Karen Spedding. It was established in 1997 with three Main Ridge vineyards - McCutcheon, Judd and Wallis - all located within a 10-minute tractor ride from each other. Three vineyards have been added since: a recently replanted high-density vineyard at the cellar door and restaurant site (organically certified in 2004), the Coolart Road Vineyard in the north of the Peninsula, and the Main Ridge Spedding Vineyard, a high-density (12 120 vines/ha) pinot noir vineyard planted in '16. The wines are released in three ranges: 10X, made from a number of estate-managed vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula; Estate, a reserve level blend; and Single Vineyard, from the best performing vineyard sites, usually a single block. In February 2018, a fire destroyed the main storage facility at the cellar door and restaurant site, with over 16 000 bottles of wine lost (including a treasured collection acquired across 20 years for the restaurant cellar). The site was rebuilt, including a new private dining room and underground cellar for the restaurant, as well as a private cellar door tasting room and wine gallery. The gallery (due to open in late '20) will include many items from the Speddings' wine history collection and will tell the story of the development of the wine industry in the Mornington Peninsula and the rest of Victoria. About

Ten Minutes by Tractor started in 1997 with three vineyards in Main Ridge, all ten minutes by tractor apart. Over the past 15 years, Martin and Karen Spedding’s energy, drive and vision have transformed the estate into what it is today. A number of vineyards have been added, with a diverse range of micro-climates from across the Peninsula. These include the Coolart Road vineyard, now home to a new purpose-built winery; the Spedding Vineyard, site of the first large scale high density pinot noir vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula; and the Winebar vineyard on the cellar door and restaurant site, the first organically certified vineyard in the region. The tapestry of different aspects, slopes, soils, altitude and maritime influence of sites may be ten minutes by tractor from each other, but the wines can seem worlds apart.

There are three ranges: Single Vineyard: from the home Judd, McCutcheon, Wallis and Coolart Road Vineyards; Estate: the best blend of pinot and chardonnay; and finally 10X: sourced across all of the Estate’s Mornington Peninsula vineyards.

The restaurant has undergone a rebuild and will reopen at the end of 2019.
