The definitive guide to Australian Wines
Mitchelton was founded by Ross Shelmerdine, who had a vision splendid for the striking winery, restaurant, observation tower and surrounding vineyards. The expected volume of tourism did not eventuate, and the business became embroiled in a long-running dispute. In 1994 it was acquired by Petaluma, but, once again, did not deliver the expected financial return, notwithstanding the long and faithful service of chief winemaker Don Lewis, or the quality of its best wines. In Aug 2012 a new chapter opened for Mitchelton, with the completion of an acquisition agreement by Gerry Ryan OAM, and son Andrew. Gerry founded caravan company Jayco in 1975, and as a consequence of the success of that company, has a virtually unlimited budget to take Mitchelton to the next level. Winemaker Travis Clydesdale has had a long association with Mitchelton, dating back to when he was a small boy and his father was cellar manager. Exports to all major markets.
